Floods and Flooding
The Flood Warning Service
For an explanation of the Environment Agency flood warning service go to Flood Warnings
Floodline Warnings Direct
If you are in a flood zone and have a landline phone you will receive automated flood warnings to your landline phone when issued by the Environment Agency. However, to receive flood warnings to a mobile phone by recorded message or SMS text you must register your mobile number with the free flood warning service - Floodline Warnings Direct. Once registered, you will receive flood warnings and severe flood warnings when they are issued, plus messages to tell you when these warnings are no longer in force.
To receive Flood Alert messages, the lowest level of flood warning, you need to make a specific request when registering. You can check and update your flood warning registration details online or by calling Floodline on 0845 988 1188
To register online with Floodline Warnings Direct if your home or business is at risk of flooding go to: Register With Floodline Warnings Direct

Sandbags
Sandbags are not normally distributed to the public or to businesses. However, they may be made available for dwellings in cases of imminent danger when a flood emergency has been declared. Otherwise, sandbags are available from builders merchants and the main DIY chains.
Sandbags are popular but have disadvantages. Synthetic absorbent bags are commercially available, lightweight when dry, easy to store and do not need to be filled. However, although they work in fresh and brackish water they are not generally effective in sea water unless initially activated with fresh tap or rain water. Before purchasing consult the supplier to check they will work in your situation and how to use them effectively.
