Floods and Flooding

For practical advice on what to do to protect you and your property before, during and after a flood see the Environment Agency Flood Advice Guides

For support and advice to communities and individuals that have been flooded or are at risk of flooding follow the link to The National Flood Forum

Services and products that are available to improve flood resilience or to assist in making repairs following a flood event can also be found through the National Flood Forum Blue Pages Directory.

Sandbags

Sandbags are not normally distributed to the public or to businesses.  However, they may be made available for dwellings in cases of imminent danger when a flood emergency has been declared.  Otherwise, sandbags are available from builders merchants and the main DIY chains.

Sandbags are popular but have disadvantages.  Synthetic absorbent bags are commercially available, lightweight when dry, easy to store and do not need to be filled.  However, although some work well in fresh and brackish water they are not generally effective in sea water unless initially activated with fresh tap or rain water.  Consult the supplier to check they will work in your situation and how to use them effectively.
