Non-Domestic Rates or Business Rates as it is frequently called; is a tax payable in respect of occupied and some unoccupied business premises.

Business Rates in this area are payable to Great Yarmouth Borough Council who collect them on behalf of the Government.

General Information

The Business Rates that are collected by Local Authorities are paid into a central pool and are re-distributed to Local Authorities based on the population of the area. Great Yarmouth’s share of the re-distributed rate income, together with income from its Council Tax payers, the Revenue Support Grant which is provided by the Government, and other income that is collected, is used to pay for the services that we provide for you

Rural Rate Relief

Recovery

If you fail to pay your instalments by the due date given on your bill, recovery action will commence. All instalment payers will be subject to the same recovery procedures in accordance with the National Non-Domestic Rate (Administration and Enforcement) Regulations.

The following action is taken:

• A Final Notice will be issued if your payment is not made when due.

• Failure to comply with a Final Notice will lead to the issue of a summons by the Magistrates Court. Costs associated with the recovery action will be applied for.

• Great Yarmouth Borough Council applies to the court for a Liability Order which allows the Council to:

  • Use bailiffs to obtain payment

  • Instigate insolvency proceedings

  • Apply for committal to prison.
