Notification and Register of Cooling Towers

The Notification of Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers Regulations 1992

Following investigations in the late 1980’s into outbreaks of Legionnaires Disease, it was found that water cooled ventilation systems presented a particular hazard because they generate fine water droplets which can then be carried away by air currents. Because these cooling towers are often located on the roofs of large buildings they have the potential to spread the water droplets and any legionella bacteria over a large area.

In the event of an outbreak of Legionnaires Disease, the register will provide a starting point in any investigation and allow for the most likely sources to be checked quickly. There are of course many other potential sources of legionella bacteria within any building.
