The Borough Council is a maritime Authority and as such has permissive powers to carry out management works along its coast. The area of coast line covered by this authority extends from Hopton boundary with Corton in the south through to Winterton Beach Road at north of the borough. The area north of Beach Road Winterton comes under the control of the Environment Agency as the land behind the defenses is a flood plane.

The coast line is regularly monitored and inspected for changes in beach profiles, natural environment and damage to existing defenses.
The Council is in the process of looking at two areas where there are concerns to coast protection. The first is Gorleston where a scheme had been produced but did not meet the approval of the local residents and is under review. The second location is at Scratby where there is evidence of erosion of the fore dunes to north of an existing defence.
The Council also has a duty to erect and maintain navigation markers on structures that it has placed in or near the sea
