The Seafront - an important part of our tourist economy

Great Yarmouth's 'Golden Mile' has been the focus of tourist activity within the Borough, as well as the home to many small to medium sized businesses. Tourism in this popular holiday destination has a strong influence over the economy of the town, particularly during the summer months.

The wide range of attractions includes some valuable assets of historic importance, including the Wellington and Britannia piers, The Aquarium (now the Hollywood Cinema), the Windmill and the Hippodrome Circus.

The Golden Mile is the 'theme park' of Great Yarmouth and boasts a variety of entertainment's from the Venetian Gardens at the northern end, through the colourful rides and attractions, Sealife Centre, arcades, restaurants and hotels, to the Pleasure Beach at the southern end of the 'mile'.

The inteGREAT scheme encouraged refurbishment and investment in existing facilities and encouraged entrepreneur's to diversify, particularly to promote the evening economy and to extend the season outside the main six week summer holiday period.

In order to update the look of the Golden Mile, make it safer and more accessible, a programme of improvemed road layouts were implemented. These include innovative, 'active' lighting that floods the beach with colour, or changing colours (computer controlled) promoting a lively atmosphere for evening entertainments.
