A ‘hackney carriage’ is more commonly known as a taxi. A hackney carriage vehicle licence is required for any vehicle that can carry up to eight passengers that will ply for hire, be flagged down or hired at a taxi rank.
Great Yarmouth Borough Council currently has 170 licensed hackney carriages. New vehicle licences are only granted to brand new purpose built fully accessible vehicles.

Private Hire Vehicle Licences
Private hire vehicles cannot ply for hire in the street or at taxi ranks. Journeys must be pre-booked, normally by telephone or in person at a cab office. Private hire vehicles include chauffeur driven cars to airports, nightclubs, etc. but wedding and funeral vehicles are exempt.

Private Hire Operator Licence
An operator’s licence is required for anyone operating a private hire vehicle. This licence is required to enable a person to accept or invite bookings for private hire vehicles. It is a condition of this licence that details all bookings are recorded in a log book.

Hackney Carriage/Private Hire Vehicle Driver’s Licence
A licence is required before any person can drive a hackney carriage (taxi) or private hire vehicle.
Before a licence is granted, the applicant must satisfy the Council that they have a reasonable knowledge of the Borough by passing a local knowledge test. Once an applicant passes the local knowledge test, a licence will be granted providing they meet certain criteria, have no convictions and are medically fit to drive.
