Care-worn communal areas outside some council flats are to be given a facelift as part of the Borough Council and Advertiser ‘In Roads’ campaign.
The Council is joining forces with Pelcombe, a company with wide experience in working with councils and Government departments, to clear and re-seed gardens outside council flats.
Justin Gibbs, Housing Environmental Services Manager, said he was delighted that Pelcombe would be coming in to tackle these communal garden areas which used to be looked after by local residents.
“We have had a two-year programme to improve the environmental standards of council housing estates and most communal areas outside council flats are generally in good order, but the odd individual area still requires attention.
“In many cases the residents who used to look after these areas have moved away or become unable to carry on. Pelcombe have an enormous amount of experience in delivering a full range of New Deal, Work Based Learning, and Skills for Life contracts and I am very pleased they are able to help us by providing people-power.
“We know what a difference it can make when these areas are properly looked after. The first stage is to clear and seed them, but we will then be encouraging tenants to come forward and add their own touches, making them really attractive and an asset that all can enjoy.”
Restoring these areas will make a real contribution to the ‘In Roads’ campaign, and Pelcombe are also very interested in providing the people and skills to help other communities make real improvements in their own areas.
