From 6 April 2008 there will be a legal obligation for all planning applications to be submitted on the national standard planning application form or 1APP.
The use of these forms will be mandatory and applications not submitted on the right application form will not be considered. The existing planning application forms (with the exception of forms for mineral development) will become obsolete.
The new forms are intended to achieve consistency and will make the process of applying for planning permission more straightforward for applicants.
Different options are provided for different types of application for example:

• Householder applications,
• Applications for full planning permission
• Applications for outline planning permission,
• Applications for approval of reserved matters following an earlier grant ofoutline planning permission

At the same time as the Government makes using the new forms obligatory, there will be new rules for the validation of planning applications.
From 6 April 2008, for an application to be valid and processed by the Local Planning Authority, applicants will have to submit a minimum level of information with their applications (See “The Validation of Planning Applications: Guidance for Local Planning Authorities”, Communities and Local Government, December 2007, at www.communities.gov.uk).
