The Role of a Councillor

  • To contribute to good governance and actively encourage community participation and resident involvement in decision-making their their area

  • To represent the interests of their ward

  • To deal with constituents' enquires and representations

  • Meet regularly with key local stakeholders

  • To participate in the activities of outside bodies and report back to the council

  • To champion the causes which further the interests, quality of life and sustainable development of the community

They also work to ensure local people are informed about;

  • Services in their area

  • Decisions that affect them

  • The reasons why decisions are made

  • The rights of residents living in the borough

Annual allowances and expenses paid to Councillors

Councillors do not receive a salary for the work they do. They are however entitled to receive an allowance and expenses to ensure that they are not left out of pocket for carrying out their official duties. Councillors with special responsibilities such as Cabinet Members receive additional allowances.
