Get In Training For The East Coast Run

A special training programme for people entering a 10-kilometre run has just been published to give would-be contestants a chance to get fit for the event.

The programme has been put together by ex-Olympic runner Paul Evans to help and encourage people who don’t take regular exercise to join the race which takes in Great Yarmouth seafront as part of the course.

The East Coast Run, now in its second year, will start and end at St George’s Park.

“It will be a mix of club and serious runners and members of the public,” said race director, Karen Manning of Great Yarmouth Road Runners.

Karen is hoping that last year’s entry of more than 400 runners will be topped on October 25, by at least another 100 competitors.

Paul’s daily running programme starts in week one with some easy jogging and walking and builds week by week to take in 55 minute jogs/walks and runs of 15 or 20 minutes. He will also be running workshops and ongoing support and advice for novices.

Charles Allen, Exercise Referral Co-ordinator for the race’s main sponsor, Great Yarmouth and Waveney NHS, sees the run as an excellent opportunity for people who take little or no exercise to have a goal to aim for.

“This gives people something to focus on,” he said. “We are also encouraging businesses and organisations to enter teams that could use the event as a fund raiser for charity to help encourage participants.”

If 10 kilometres seems a little daunting, there is a new event a one mile family fun run around the park, which will start just after the main race.

There are several cash prizes for the East Coast Run, including two new ones - for a corporate team and a junior prize for entrants between the ages of 16 and 20.

The event is getting the backing of several local organisations including Great Yarmouth Sports Partnership, Great Yarmouth Borough Council, Active Norfolk, Cultural Partnership, Yarmouth Mercury, Town Centre Partnership and Recycle for Norfolk..

Entry forms can be downloaded PDF Document here or from the Road Runners website http://www.gyrr.moonfruit.com/. The race is open to entrants from 16-years-of-age. It begins at 10.30am. Entry fee is £8 to UKA members or £10 for other runners.
