GB Beach Volleyball Success At Great Yarmouth

Two British teams took on and beat competition from beach volleyball players from South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia in the Great Yarmouth leg of a nationwide series of events.

Held on the resort’s Central Beach on Saturday and Sunday, winners took valuable points towards the final of the 2009 Volleyball England Beach Tour to be played in Blackpool in September.

The competition consists of four rounds, with Great Yarmouth’s being the third.

Ten women’s and 24 men’s teams took to the sand, in an event which many see as gaining valuable experience in the run-up to the 2012 Olympics.

The women’s winners were Liané Herbert and Helen Brown from Newport Pagnell and Bournemouth respectively, while Bath University team Jake Sheaf and Josh Randall lifted the men’s trophy.

Held over two days, near to the Britannia Pier, spectators enjoyed the free spectacle from a specially constructed stand.

“This is the fourth year we have hosted a round of the competition,” said Culture, Sport and Tourism Manager Marie Hartley. “And this year is the best yet.

“The weather was excellent and the players top class, many are vying for selection to represent their country.

“Volleyball England was extremely pleased with the weekend and the facilities we provided, which bodes well for an international team using Great Yarmouth as its training base camp for the London 2012 Olympics.”

Lisa Wainwright, CEO of Volleyball England said “The Great Yarmouth event continues the huge success of the new look VEBT.  With sunshine, top class beach volleyball and full grandstand it provided a great experience for everyone involved.”

The Mayor, Councillor Tony Smith, rounded of the two days of excellent sport by presenting trophies to the winners.
