Smoking at Work is Expensive for Taxi Driver
Smoking at work has cost a Great Yarmouth taxi driver £30.
The man was spotted by a Borough Council employee smoking while in his taxi at Theatre Plain, Great Yarmouth.
When challenged by the Council’s Environmental Health team the driver admitted the offence and paid a fixed penalty notice fine immediately.
Under the Health Act 2006 smoking in the workplace is an offence, this includes vehicles such as taxis, buses, pool cars and trade vehicles as they must be smoke-free to protect the health of other users.
No-smoking stickers should be displayed in vehicles that carry passengers or are shared. Vehicles primarily for private use are not affected by the legislation, although it could pay to check about those undertaking voluntary work.
"This is the third time the Council has fined a taxi driver for smoking in their vehicle,” said Environmental Health’s Commercial Team Manager, Kate Watts.
"Despite these offences the majority of drivers are sticking to the rules, and ensuring their passengers travel in a smoke-free environment.
"If anyone is unsure of how the legislation affects them. They can give us a call on 01493 846478 for more information. The same number can be used to report anyone smoking in a vehicle that should be smoke-free.”
