Active Norfolk makes Michael shout Wii

A visit to the Norfolk Show gave seven-year-old Michael Palmer a reason to shout Wii!

The Aylsham youngster, and his mum Annette, visited Active Norfolk and NHS Norfolk’s stand where Michael’s prowess at five Olympic sports led him to win a Wii virtual games set.

Michael, a pupil at Colby Primary school, who has ambitions to be an Olympic runner, showed his skills in hockey, football, athletics, cycling and swimming to be entered in a draw with hundreds of other contestants.

He received his prize from Active Norfolk’s chairman, Bert Collins in Great Yarmouth on July 23.

“We had thousands of visitors to the stand and it gave them a practical taste of the events, and put them into contact with local clubs and the sports’ national governing bodies,” explained Mr Collins, who is also a county and borough councillor in Great Yarmouth.

Michael, who described his delight at winning as, “being more than very pleased” couldn’t wait to get home and take on older brother Thomas (12) and sister Catherine (14) at some of the Wii sports.

Active Norfolk is a partnership between all the local authorities in the county. Formed in 2000 it promotes participation in sports such as cricket, tennis, girls football and athletics by young people, and encourages adults to train as coaches.

Launched in 2006, Active Norfolk is one of the county sports partnerships created by Sports England. The partnership strives to make Norfolk an active, healthy and successful sporting county by increasing levels of participation in sport and physical activity.

In Great Yarmouth the school holidays provide a great opportunity to achieve this, with a children’s holiday activity programme which includes gymnastics, badminton, golf, archery, tennis, beach volleyball, skiing and multi sports going on throughout the summer.
