Another Great Yarmouth taxi driver has learnt a costly lesson that smoking in his cab is not allowed.
Trevor Phillips, of 43 Fredrick Road Great Yarmouth NR31 8BN was summoned to appear at Great Yarmouth Magistrates Court on Friday 12 December. Mr Phillips was charged with smoking in a smoke free place (taxi) and littering.
Mr Philips failed to appear and the case was heard in his absence. He was found guilty of both offences and fined £175 for each offence with costs of £61.12.
Under the Health Act 2006 vehicles such as taxis, buses, pool cars and trade vehicles must be smoke free to protect the health of other users.
“The legislation has been in place for over two years and there is no excuse for drivers that carry passengers not to comply with it. While everyone may not agree with the legislation, it is the Council’s duty to uphold the law and we will continue to vigorously enforce this legislation” said Kate Watts Commercial Team Manager.
“We hope this will send a message to all businesses that we take the legislation very seriously and will not hesitate to prosecute anyone who breaks the law. The public can report anyone smoking in a vehicle that should be smoke-free by calling 01493 846478”
