St George's Park Receives Prestigious Green Flag Award

The flag will be flying at St George’s Park in Great Yarmouth to celebrate its recognition as one of country’s finest parks - after receiving a sought after Green Flag at an awards ceremony in Bournemouth. green flag award

Clifton Hughes from Great Yarmouth Borough Services who maintains the park and Jools Tinsley from Great Yarmouth Borough Council Environmental Services were presented with their award by TV presenter Michaela Strachan in the presence of 1,500 people at the official Green Flag awards ceremony held at the Pavilion Theatre in Bournemouth on Thursday 23rd July 2009.

In 2007 St George’s Park underwent a £2 million redevelopment which saw improved play facilities for children, new landscaping and better lighting to add security to the area.

The park is a popular venue for events, with September’s Out There festival choosing it as an arena for many of its acts.

St Georges Park EntrancePhil Barton chief executive, Keep Britain Tidy said: "I would like to congratulate this year’s winners, who have worked hard throughout the year to keep their parks to a high standard and ensure they are pleasant and enjoyable spaces for the whole community.”

Green Flag Awards recognise and reward the best parks in the country and the win comes at an exciting time in the development of the Green Flag Awards that are now run by environmental charity, Keep Britain Tidy, GreenSpace and BTCV(British Trust for Conservation Volunteers), who have been inundated by applications as parks value the coveted award.

"This is the second year that St George’s has awarded a Green Flag therefore recognising it as an excellent asset to the borough,” said Councillor Jim Shrimplin, Cabinet Member for Environment.

"It is a beautiful, clean open space for people of all ages to enjoy, whether it is children exploring the new play equipment or other people relaxing in the open air. I want to congratulate everyone involved in making the park such an asset to the borough.”
