What You Said About Your Borough

Residents took to the polls on Wednesday, 28th October, when Great Yarmouth Borough Council asked “Do you think the Borough of Great Yarmouth is a better place to live now, than 5 years ago?”

To encourage voter registration a mock polling station was featured as part of ‘Your Borough, Your Say’, event and the question was asked in the form of a ballot paper. There were no spoilt papers and the count revealed 61% had voted Yes.

“Although not an official ballot its good to know that people are recognising the regeneration that has been delivered in the past few years” said Barry Stone, Deputy Leader of the Council “Whilst voting people commented on how improvements to St Georges park, the seafront and South Quay had made a real difference.”

Residents also had a chance to express their views by writing on a ‘graffiti wall’.  There were fifty-nine varied comments on areas that really matter to residents including service provision, the town and surroundings, toilets, culture and police provision. Everyone who added to the wall was entered into a competition to win tickets for the Polish National Symphony Orchestra.

A number of other organisations were also represented including the Police Authority, Adult Education and Library Services.

The Seachange stand featured the successful ‘Out There Festival’ and the forthcoming International Concert Series. EnterpriseGY were on hand to give advice to those seeking to set up in business and the Voluntary Sector Partnership gave information on volunteering.

Christmas also came early for three lucky winners of the design the Mayor’s Christmas card competition, who won Hippodrome Circus tickets donated by Christine and Peter Jay.

All the information gathered from the event will help those involved continue to improve the services they offer.
