Reminder to Dog Owners
At this time of year with the days getting shorter there is a temptation for dog owners to allow their pets to foul and not clear up after them. Great Yarmouth Borough Council’s Environmental Ranger team would like to remind dog owners that the whole of Great Yarmouth Borough is covered by the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996. Failure to clear up after a dog has fouled can incur a fine of up to £1,000.
Paul Shucksmith, Senior Environmental Ranger at Great Yarmouth Borough Council said: “We have received numerous complaints about dog fouling in certain areas. It’s usual for this time of the year as owners use the cover of darkness to avoid clearing up after their pets”.
“At this stage we are working to raise awareness and educate people. The act of not clearing up after a dog is not only an offence but anti-social and potentially hazardous – especially to young children as it can cause toxocariasis if it comes into contact with the eyes”.
The Environmental Ranger team are stepping up the number of patrols in problem areas and increasing educational and awareness measures such as letter drops, dog fouling stickers and community education.
