Street Naming and Numbering

Change or addition of Property Name

Anglia In Bloom 2009

The Council can arrange for property name changes, removal  or a name added to a property which has a number only. For this service, there is a fee of forty pounds (£40.00) which covers administration, the cheque being made payable to Great Yarmouth Borough Council. Please note, you cannot replace a number with a name.

Street Numbering
A new street is usually numbered with even numbers on the right (approaching from the town centre) and odd numbers on the left, except for a cul-de-sac where numbering is usually consecutive.

A property with only a name must display it. Where a name has been allocated as well as a number, this must always be used with the number. It cannot be regarded as an alternative.

Street Naming
A new street name should be completely different from any already in use in the area.  Please telephone us if you are unsure.

  • Names should be unambiguous and easily understood over the phone (to enable effective emergency service response).

  • Naming of a road after a well known local personality from a past era may be acceptable. It is essential that the person put forward lived in the town or village in question.

  • It is desirable that any suggested road names have a local geographical or historical connection.

  • Naming roads after members of the developer's family is to be avoided, unless they meet the required criteria listed above.

  • Naming of any roads, terraces or courtyards etc after 'living persons' is not acceptable.

  • The informal adoption of unofficial ‘marketing’ titles used by developers in the sale of new properties is not allowed.

If the developer is unable to suggest any names then this Department will be happy to assist.

The final decision on street naming rests with the Borough Council. Before a name or numbering system is agreed, the Council has to consult the Royal Mail, notify Ward and Parish Councillors, and take into account the requirements of the Emergency Services.
