Road Spillages

Spillages on roads can take many forms and the nature of the spillage will depend on the response. The Council and it's partner organisations do not have any special emergency powers to deal with road spills - we have to use our everyday legislation.

The primary agency to deal with matters on the highway is the County Council Highways Authority. More often then not such spills are also a traffic hazard and so the Police would be made aware. Dependant on the material other agencies would also have an interest such as Fire and Rescue and Environment Agency.

  • The local Police should be notified of all spillages using 999 in the event of an emergency or use the non emergency number: 0845 456 4567.

  • For chemical or hazardous spills the Fire Service should also be notified on 999.

  • Where material is likely to enter the underground drainage system notify Anglian Water.

  • In the event the spillage may affect the local environment (air pollution, contamination of land, pollution of water courses) both the Environment Agency and Great Yarmouth Borough Council Environmental Health should be advised.

Which ever agency the matter is initially reported to should make the others aware if they believe there is an involvement for them.

GYB Services may also be able to assist with street cleaning.
