Cycling and Cycleways
Great Yarmouth already has over twice the national average of commuter cyclists. For shorter journeys it is an ideal way to keep fit and healthy, as well as being a cheaper alternative to the car and cleaner for the environment. More than one million people in the UK already cycle to work because they know that cycle commuting is fast, door-to-door, great exercise, enjoyable and the ultimate green commuter choice.

Cycling Tips

cycling
  • Ensure your bike is mechanincally sound, fit a bell and working lights.

  • Wear light coloured clothing or something reflective to ensure that you can be seen.

  • Do not cycle on pavements unless signs or markings allow you to do so.

  • Wear a cycle helmet.

  • Always lock your bike securely. A good quality D-shaped lock offers more sercurity than a padlock and chain.

  • Mark the frame with your postcode; this will assist the police in tracing the owner.

Great Yarmouth Cycle Map and Guide
Great Yarmouth Cycle Map and Guide has been compiled by Norfolk County Council in conjunction with the Great Yarmouth Cycle Forum and the Borough Council. The map is available to download under further information:

It shows on-road and off-road routes and is designed to allow easier planning of pleasant or more direct cycle trips across the urban area.

Great Yarmouth Cycle Forum
The first Great Yarmouth Cycle Forum was held in April 2000 and meets quarterly in Great Yarmouth Town Hall. The aim of the group is to involve its members in future cycling schemes and initiatives as a consultee, and to encourage and promote cycling.

Members include a range of interested parties such as residents, Borough Council Planning Officers, the Town Centre Manager, the Traffic Manager for Norfolk Constabulary, Local Members and Norfolk County Council.
