Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

There are 41 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in England and Wales which, along with National Parks are recognised as being our most important scenic areas and worthy of special protection.

The Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty covers inter-tidal, coastal and agricultural land with a total area of over 450 square kilometres. Stretching from the silt expanses of the Wash in the west through the coastal marshes, soft cliffs and hinterland of north Norfolk, to the dune system at Winterton in the east, it is an area of remarkable beauty, diversity and scientific importance.

What does an AONB designation mean for Planning Policy?
Planning authorities have an obligation to include policies within their  local plans which aim to conserve and enhance the special scenic qualities of AONBs. The powers within the planning system, however, do not cover all aspects of change within the area. "Permitted development" and changes in land management are obvious exceptions. The Borough Wide Local Plan Policy NNV1 safeguards the varied characters and features of the landscape within and adjoining the plan area.
