Sustainable Development
As part of the new Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 a Sustainability Appraisal (SA) must be produced alongside each Development Plan Document (DPD) and Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) in the Local Development Framework (LDF). The purpose of this process is to ensure that due consideration is given to the social, economic and environmental implications of the document under consideration.

The Sustainability Appraisal Scoping Report
The role of the Sustainability Appraisal Scoping Report is to identify and highlight the sustainability issues within the borough and use these to produce a sustainability framework against which the emerging Core Strategy options can be assessed.
A number of sources were used to highlight the sustainability issues within the borough. These included looking at the issues arising from higher level plans, programmes and objectives relevant to the LDF, issues identified from baseline information and highlighted through public consultation as well as recent technical studies undertaken by the Council.
Representations on the Sustainability Appraisal Scoping Report have now been received from statutory consultees. Representations and suggested amendments to the Sustainability Appraisal Scoping Report are set out below As a result of the representations received the Great Yarmouth Borough Council Sustainability Scoping Report has been amended and used to inform the preparation of the draft Core Strategy Preferred Options stage and to inform future Development Plan Documents.

Preliminary Sustainability Appraisal of the Site Specific Allocations and Development Control Policies Issues and Options DPDs
A preliminary Sustainability Appraisal (Stage B) has been prepared for the Site Specific Allocations and Development Control Policies Issues and Options DPDs. This report is part of Stage B in the SA process and is therefore limited in scope as it is not the full report. Unlike in earlier drafts of the SA guidance a formal Initial Sustainability Appraisal is no longer required however the guidance recommends that public and stakeholder involvement on the SA is undertaken concurrently with consultation on the DPD. Therefore, the Council has produced this report which was published for consultation from 29 June 2007 to 10 August 2007. The full Sustainability Appraisal Report will be completed at the Preffered Options stage.
