Stray Dogs

Arrangements for collection of stray dogs in Great Yarmouth from 6 April 2008 are:

Mon - Fri     09.00 - 17.00 Tel: (01493) 846478
                 17.00 - 20.00 Tel: (01493) 330369

Weekends & Bank Holidays Tel: (01493) 330369

The above numbers are the Council's contact centre and out of hours emergency contact centre respectively.  They will contact the Council's Contractor who will collect the stray if and only if it has been secured.  We do not have a Dog Warden service nor do we have a reception centre where the public can take a dog.  All strays must be secured for the Contractor to collect.

By law all dogs when out in public places must wear an identity tag giving details of their owners name and address. This enables any person finding a stray to contact the owners so that it does not have to go to the kennels as a stray.

The Council has a statutory duty to recover the costs involved in the detention of a stray dog and the average charge for the recovery of a stray is between £70 and £90. Strays are held for 7 days prior to being either rehomed if possible or euthanased. A register of dogs found is kept by the Environmental Health Department.

To report a stray for collection or to report a lost dog please contact the Environmental Health Department.
