If you are a Council housing tenant the first step towards taking eviction proceedings is the service of a Notice Seeking Possession by your Estate Manager.

The Notice will state how the Council alleges the tenant has failed to comply with the terms of their tenancy, and will normally give a date before which court action will not be started. The Notice lasts a year from when it is received, and court action can be started at any time within that year.

On receiving a Notice Seeking Possession the tenant should contact their Estate Manager, whose contact details are shown on the letter sent with the notice. The problem can often be resolved without the tenant having to go to court at all.

Occasionally a notice will be issued e.g. on grounds of nuisance, which indicates that court action will be commenced straight away. In that case, the tenant is recommended to consult a solicitor or the Citizens Advice Bureau as soon as possible.

There is no County Court in Great Yarmouth, but arrangements can usually be made for cases to be heard in Great Yarmouth at the Magistrates' Court offices at North Quay except for last-minute applications.
