If you are a secure tenant of a Local Authority or Housing Association and wish to move, you may wish to consider exchanging your home with another Council or Housing Association Tenant.

To help tenants find an exchange, Homeselect (Great Yarmouth Lettings Partnership) in partnership with Circle Anglia operates House Exchange - a web based mutual exchange search website.

Simply visit www.yarmouth.houseexchange.org.uk and complete your details on line. The site is easy and free to use.

Once you have found someone you would like to swap homes with, you must contact your landlord for an application form to put your request in writing.

You cannot move without the written agreement of both landlords.

We must tell you within 42 days whether you can go ahead with the exchange. We can only refuse an exchange in certain circumstances and we must tell you why.

We will need to inspect your property and you will be asked to rectify any damage or breach of tenancy condition before the exchange can go ahead.

We will also check your rent account and it must be up to date.

The landlord of the other tenant will do the same.

Both landlords will then exchange reports.

If the exchange is agreed we will contact you to agree a convenient date for your move.

We will arrange gas and electric safety checks before the move can take place.

All of the tenants involved in the swap will need to sign up to the other persons’ tenancy.

Whilst we try and process your application quickly, this process does take time to complete and you will need to be realistic about the date that you want to move. You must not move without the written permission of the landlord council.

Some tenants may have a different type of tenancy to your own. You need to check out any difference especially if you currently have the right to buy your own property, as in some instances you may lose this right.
