Parents are being asked not to screw up and throw away a survey about play if their child brings it home from school.
Great Yarmouth Borough Council’s Play Development Worker Adrian Barnes is visiting all 33 infant, junior and primary schools in the borough before half-term to gain the help of the people who really know about play - the children.
“Part of my job is to develop and implement a play programme to increase opportunities for three to 11-year-olds to get access to free play,” said Adrian.
“We recognise that in some areas barriers exist to children accessing play, but we need to know from the young people and their parents what the problems are.”
A child-friendly questionnaire has been developed and is being handed out to one class in each year group in all the 33 schools.
It has a range of questions such as:
The Council is keen that parent’s help the young people to complete and return the forms, and is giving a free swim token for the Marina Centre for every child that takes part.
“We need the views of as many young people as possible in both the rural and urban parts of the borough,” added Adrian. “Please take a few moments to help your child tell us what they need in the way of free play.”
Participants have until October 24 to return the form.
If your child isn’t given a form you can still take part, visit www.gyslt.com/playsurvey.html to download the survey or complete on line, or call Adrian Barnes on 01493 851521, or email adrianbarnes@gyslt.com.
Adrian’s post as Play Development Worker is funded by the Council’s successful £243,400 Big Lottery Fund bid. Part of the money has also been used to successfully install equipment that appeals to teenagers.
