French Minister to Savour all the Fun of the Fair

PR 164

5 April 2006

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Gerard Larcher the French Delegate Minister for Employment, Labour and Integration of Youth Employment, will be an honoured guest at the opening of this year’s Easter Fair at Great Yarmouth.

The Minister will be part of the civic party which processes from the Town Hall to the fair, held in the Market Place, to take part in the official opening at 7pm on Thursday April 20.

The party will also include the Mayor and Mayoress of Great Yarmouth Cllr George and Mrs Brenda Jermany, with the Mayor of the town’s French twin Rambouillet, Jean-Frederic Poisson (Gerard Larcher is a past Mayor of Rambouillet).

The fair takes place during the weekend of a visit by 70 residents of Rambouillet to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the towns’ twinning.

The visit has been organised by the Great Yarmouth and Rambouillet Twinning Committee whose members arrange bi-annual trips to France, with visitors coming to Great Yarmouth in the alternating year.

All the guests are invited to the Easter Fair which will have 95 rides and stalls. Attractions will range from old favourites such as the Gallopers, Dodgems and Helter Skelter to more modern rides such as The Extreme and Energy Storm aimed at those with a strong stomach who enjoy being spun around at great speeds.

Other entertainment during the French guests’ visit includes a 1950s style tea dance, a public re-signing of a Twinning Charter, and a concert on the theme of Friendship in St Nicholas Church.

A limited edition tankard is to go on sale during the visit. Designed by Ernie Childs at Great Yarmouth Potteries it is to be unveiled on Friday 21.It is rumoured to reflect both towns and the 50th anniversary.

“Ernie Childs has also been at work designing a bronze plate which we would like to present to the people of Rambouillet when we visit the town in September,” said Chairperson of the Committee, Hilary Evans.

“If people would like to make a contribution we will enter all donations into a book which will be presented at the same time as the plate.

The towns became ‘twins’ in 1956 to enable citizens to understand one another’s culture better, when early trips were mainly by school children.

The Easter Fair will arrive in the town on Wednesday 19 and the children’s rides will open at 10am on Thursday 20, with adult rides opening at 6am. Opening times on Friday and Saturday are 11.30am to 11pm. The rides are located over the Market Place, Fullers Hill, Brewery Plain and Market Square.
