Civic Service to be Held in Village for First Time
PR 166
18 April 2006
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Great Yarmouth’s Mayor George Jermany is breaking with tradition by taking a Civic Service out of town for the first time - and holding it in St Mary the Virgin Church, Hemsby, on Sunday April 23.
The Mayor has represented Hemsby on the Borough Council for 10 years. The service, an act of thanksgiving for the Mayor’s year in office, falls on St George’s Day and will be multi-denominational.
Worship will be led by the Mayor’s chaplain the Reverend Charles Powles, who will be joined by Methodist Minister the Reverend Chris Shreeve, and Frank Little from the Evangelical Congregational Church and members of their congregations.
Guests at the service will include the Chairmen of Breckland, South Norfolk, North Norfolk and Norfolk County Councils who will join Councillor Jermany and his wife in a procession from the Barn Room opposite the church.
For anyone wanting to join the 11am service the advice is to arrive early. Parishioners from the three denominations will also be joined by organisations such as Martham bell ringers, and the Marine Cadets and the Sea Training Corps who will form a guard of honour.
“After representing Hemsby for so many years, it seemed the natural thing to do to celebrate the culmination of my year in office in the parish church,” said Councillor Jermany.
“I really appreciate so many people coming together for this service. During the year we have had Civic Services in Gorleston and Great Yarmouth, by including Hemsby it completes the area the Borough Council enhances.”
