The recent heavy rain brought a torrent of calls for help to Great Yarmouth Borough Council’s Environmental Health team.
“The torrential rain meant that drains in some parts of the town north of the river were temporarily unable to cope with the deluge,” explained Head of Environment and Health John Hemsworth.
“The public, in areas such as Northgate, wanted help such as sand bags, which is something we only issue in times of a major emergency.
“So our advice is please think ahead. If you know you live in an area that does flood go to a builder’s merchants or a DIY store now, and kit yourself out with the materials you need for sandbags, or flood boards, to try and help prevent the water getting into your home.
“If you are not sure if your area is prone to flooding you can obtain information from the Environment Agency.
“The Council only becomes involved when flooding becomes a major incident such as the river breeching its banks, then we do have sandbags to disperse and are only too willing to help.”
Contact numbers in cases of flooding: highway flooding call Norfolk County Highways on 01263 738300, for mains drains call Anglian Water on 0845 7145 145.
