Sandbags Available from Great Yarmouth Borough Council
For immediate release
PR 237
23 August 2006
A torrent of calls from worried members of the public after last weeks flooding in Great Yarmouth has seen the Borough Council decide to issue sandbags, as another spell of heavy rain is forecast.
“The Council provides sandbags when there is likely to be a major river or sea flooding incident,” explained Service Delivery Manager Ian Barnett of GYB Services.
“But the nature of the current weather means that people are calling us constantly wanting sandbags.
“So we will be supplying these as a temporary measure because of the concerns of the public raised by current weather forecasts.
“They are available today. As many people will not be able to collect, and our yard cannot cope with a large influx of people collecting we will be delivering to homes in recognised flood areas.
“There will be a charge £2.50 per bag, for a minimum order of five bags to each household.”
Elected Council members will be discussing the issue of response to localised flooding because of heavy rainfall this evening.
If people would like to order sandbags please call 01493 846846.
Call Service Delivery Manager Ian Barnett on 01493 846406, or Head of Health and Environment John Hemsworth on 01493 846458.
