Bowling Tournament is High Maintenance

For immediate release

PR 238

23 August 2006

When the country’s largest bowling tournament begins on Great Yarmouth seafront at the weekend it will signify a time of high maintenance for the green keepers.

The Great Yarmouth Festival of Bowls will see all five greens in use from 9am to 7pm six days a week over three weeks.

Green keepers for GYB Services, who carries out the work for Great Yarmouth Borough Council, pulled out all the stops at the beginning of August to get the greens in tip-top condition for the tournament.

“The greens have been in constant use since the May Bank holiday, and this year have had to contend with a scorching July and downpours in August,” said Grounds and Leisure Manager Bob Allen.

“At the beginning of August we put a high-nitrogen fertiliser on the greens to ensure the grass would be green and playing well at the end of the month.

“During the tournament they will be cut at 6am every day - the downpours we have experienced over the last few weeks has meant that the greens have needed spiking whenever the weather was fine to help drain them.”

“A lot of hard work has been put in over the last few weeks, and the greens are bowling extremely well,” said Derek Webster the manager of the tournament. “I would like to thank the green keepers we do appreciate the hard work.”

The tournament will begin when Mayor Sue Robinson bowls the ball at 9am on Sunday 27. The greens will be really put to the test as Mr Webster reports that 1,500 bowlers will be taking part - 100 more than last year.
