Town Hall Open Days

For immediate release

PR 239

29 August 2006

The weekend of the Maritime Festival (9th & 10th September) offers the opportunity to visit Great Yarmouth Town Hall to take in its history and enjoy a series of talks and features about the Borough.

The Open Days Event has become an annual aspect of the Maritime Festival, and includes a Town Hall Trail which allows the public to view parts of the historic building and items such as paintings, the civic plate collection and town charters.

During the two days of the festival the Town Hall will also host displays by the Great Yarmouth and Rambouillet Twinning Association, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and Great Yarmouth and District Model Boat Club.

There will be a welcome return of The Memory Joggers. A local group, they visit schools, care homes and societies, to bring the past to the present by using objects to recall the ‘Good Old Days’.

A popular feature is talks given by local historian Colin Tooke. He will give four half-hour talks on both days (between 11am and 3.30 pm), with his subjects being; the town centre, Gorleston, remember the 1950s and the Victorian town.

Entrance to the Town Hall, the displays and talks are free. Tea, coffee and cakes will be available in the Assembly Room.
