The first Beach Volleyball Classic tournament staged on Central Beach (beside Britannia Pier) proved to be a great success. Britain’s top men and women volleyball players were amongst the 140 competitors taking part over the bank holiday weekend.

Promoted by the UEA Sportspark in partnership with Great Yarmouth Borough Council, this event is the latest addition to the National Volleyball England Beach Summer Tour and looks set to return again in August 2007.

The event saw 23 men’s teams and 15 women’s battling it out.

Eventual winners for the men were Jody Gooding and Morph Bowes, with Barry McGuigan and Robin Miedzybrodzki runners up. For the ladies Denise Austin and Gabriela Medricka took the honours ahead of Angela Clarke and Kerri Olding.

The Council’s tourism team was on hand ‘bright and early’ on both days of the event to prepare the playing area; and Councillor Bert Collins, Portfolio holder for Tourism, Culture & Enterprise, attended the event on Sunday afternoon to present trophies to the winners and runners up.

Beach Volleyball is an Olympic sport attracting huge crowds around the world. It is intended that with the superb beach setting at Great Yarmouth, the tournament will over the next few years in the run up to 2012 attract players from Europe as well.
