Homefield First School Visit Town Hall

Year Two children from Homefield First School, Bradwell, made a visit to Great Yarmouth Town Hall on Monday to study the architecture and see where the Council works.

The 45 six and seven-year-olds are studying the topic Can Buildings Speak. The visit to the Town Hall will help them to create tiles to form a mosaic based on local buildings.

A tour of the interior and exterior of the building gave the youngsters the opportunity to sit in the Council chamber where members hold their meetings.

“The children have their own school council meetings which see representatives of each class discuss and vote on current topics,” explained Year 2 teacher Mrs Elizabeth Denny. “Therefore it was very relevant to them.”

The children were fascinated by the Victorian building and Mrs Denny said that when her class entered the ornate Assembly Rooms used for ceremonials their reaction was one of awe.

“It was a real wow moment,” she added. “Their imagination flowed, some were even convinced that the room was used for a princesses’ ball.”

One of the other rooms to receive great attention was just off the Mayor’s Parlour with ideas from the youngsters that the door was probably to the room that kept gold or treasurers. In reality it was just a toilet specially built for a visit by Princess Margaret.

The idea that royalty and important people visited the Town Hall prompted one little boy to ask if Jesus had ever been there.

To add to the visit, the children were accompanied by Radio Norfolk reporter Andrew Turner who recorded a special feature to be broadcast later that week.
