Lesley is Top of the Class!

PR 116

4 January 2006

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

A lady who took a job as a temp in Great Yarmouth Borough Council’s Planning and Development department has just shown her contemporaries a clean pair of heels by winning a top student award.

Technical Assistant Lesley Way joined the Council in 2001 in an administration role, and then transferred as a temp to Planning where she was encouraged by Development Control Officer Ed Gilder to gain qualifications.

In September 2004 she enrolled on a year-long course in professional studies in planning and environment from which she successfully gained a diploma, together with a letter from the University of Central England in Birmingham congratulating her on winning the course’s Most Successful Student prize.

“I was very surprised to win the prize,” said Lesley. “And I haven’t been given details of why it was awarded to me.

“But I received a £25 book token which I have already spent on a book for year two of the course which will lead to an advanced diploma. There is also the possibility of studying for two further years to gain a Masters degree.”

Lesley has been attending the Birmingham University for two days a month to study topics as diverse as the history of planning and environmental issues including global warming.

Her job as a Technical Assistant sees her prepare planning applications for planning officers.

The Council’s Leader Barry Coleman presented Lesley with book tokens to the value of £25 on December 21.

He congratulated her and said: “Training and professional development are important aspects of our role as an employer. I am delighted with the enthusiasm and dedication shown by Lesley since joining the Borough Council.”

The presentation was made at the recent Leader’s Reception at the Town Hall, which is given for local businesses and key partners to thank them for their support.
