Bradwell Community Woodland Project
PR 119
18 January 2006
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEA steering group of local people in Bradwell has been formed to work with the environmental and educational charity Green Light Trust, which through its People Planting Scheme aims to help communities create and manage their own woodland.
The Bradwell Community Woodland Project sees its project as building a long-term, sustainable basis for pleasure, learning, health and wildlife.
As part of the Green Light Trust’s School Rolling Programme, the Woodland Project is working with children from Hillside and Homefield First Schools.
They have collected and planted seeds in their own tree nursery. By doing this and tending the tree seedlings year by year, they will gain practical experience and understanding of nature’s cycle through creative and active participation.
Eventually, their trees will be re-planted in the community woodland.
“Full engagement of Bradwell community is sought at every stage to ensure a sense of long-term ownership, firing community spirit and local pride,” explained Vicki Collins, Secretary of Bradwell Community Woodland Project.
“Other activities have included a Design Day and sponsor a tree campaign.
“Great Yarmouth Borough Council has given us permission to manage the piece of land between El Alamein Estate and Mill Lane Playing field for our woodland, which is fantastic news.
“Our first community planting day is going to be on
Saturday 11 February starting at
10.30am. Please meet up at
Mill Lane Community Centre and bring a spade if you can. Refreshments will be available.
ALL ARE WELCOME.
“We would also like to give a special thank you to the following sponsors who have provided funding for the days’ planting. They are Essex & Suffolk Water, Norfolk Homes, Badger Building, Access Scaffolding and to those people who have sponsored a tree. Plus, Green Light Trust for the initial set up funds and its invaluable help and support.
“The Council has been pleased to help Bradwell Community Woodland Project,” said Environmental Strategy Manager Simon Mutten. “Their work will create a long-term project with appeal to all ages.”
