Vandalism at Cemetery is being Addressed
PR 120
18 January 2006
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASERecent vandalism at Caister Borough Cemetery, which has seen graves damaged and mourner’s flowers stolen, is being addressed using a variety of measures.
A broken perimeter fence was being used by young people and drug addicts as a way of accessing the cemetery after it was closed.
The fence has been repaired and a shelter, which the youngsters and addicts were using as a meeting place, has been enclosed to prevent entry.
“We have been experiencing some problems at Caister,” said Bereavement Services Manager, Linda Bigg. “We have evidence that the shelter was used for drug taking, and local people believe that whoever was using it also damaged the graves and stole the flowers.
A mechanical digger has been used to reduce the height of the land on the cemetery side of the fence - this aims to stop intruders jumping over the fence.
