Park Strategy - Your Views Please

PR 125

31 January 2006

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Two years work looking at the future of the parks and green spaces in the Borough of Great Yarmouth is coming to a close with an invitation to the public to air their views.

The Council’s Environmental Strategy Manager, Simon Mutten, has headed a research programme to look at the provision of parks and open green spaces in the Borough, their use and the future needs of residents and visitors.

The result is the recently published consultation document which explains aspects such as the thinking behind the process, the Borough’s needs, The Council’s vision and how the strategy links with the aims and objectives of other projects being pursued by the Council and the Local Strategic Partnership.

The Parks and Open Spaces Strategy began in 2003 when a Government initiative set up CABE Space (Commission for Architecture and Built Environment) to help reverse the decline of urban green spaces. Great Yarmouth was one of 30 local authorities chosen to take part.

Throughout 2004 the Council consulted residents and visitors to determine what they liked and disliked about the Borough parks and open spaces.

Results showed that while residents value their open spaces, they want parks and open spaces kept clean, attractive and accessible.

This information, together with an audit on the all significant areas of open space, has led to the strategy which takes into consideration the development and improvement of leisure facilities including children’s play areas and playing fields - through design, development and management.

“The strategy aims to ensure long-term commitment to our parks and open spaces to not only provide the facilities people want, but that they are also safe for them to use,” explained Simon.

“We need the views of the public to help us fulfil these aims which will improve the quality of neighbourhoods and enhance resident’s well being.

“A copy of the consultation document can be obtained here or by calling at our Maltings House office, on Southtown Road, or by writing in for a copy to Simon Mutten, Environmental Strategy Manager, Great Yarmouth Borough Council, Town Hall, Hall Plain, Great Yarmouth NR30 2QF.

“Replies can come to me in writing or by e/mail to parks@great-yarmouth.gov.uk by March 10.”
