Bells Marsh Road Finds 14 tons of Rubbish

Cycles for recycling was just one of the outcomes of an Environmental Action Day in Bells Marsh Road, which saw nearly 14 tons of rubbish cleared away.

Several agencies including the GYB Services Dynamic Environmental Response Team (DERT), the Borough Council’s Environmental Rangers and estate management team, the Police Safer Neighbourhood team and criminal damage action team joined forces to clean up rubbish and graffiti from the Bells Marsh Road area in Gorleston.

This was the first Environmental action day held in Gorleston, It was organised with the Council’s Housing Department which contacts residents to inform them how they can benefit.

Residents are given the opportunity to get rid of bulky items and white goods, while pavements and surrounding areas receive a mechanical clean and even have the weeds removed between pavements and walls.

Residents in Bells Marsh Road took the opportunity to get rid of 10 fridges, four cookers, 12 washing machines and 18 bicycles.

A local charity Mustard Seed took six of the bicycles to refurbish.

“Environmental action days give us the opportunity to clear up areas where fly-tipping has become a problem,” explained Street Scene Inspector Terry Bensley, leader DERT team which carries out the cleaning.

“Once completed we hope it gives residents the incentive to keep the area tidy and free from dumped rubbish.”
