Town Hall to Close For Glasswork Repairs

Storm damage to decorative roof glasswork in Great Yarmouth Town Hall has forced the closure of some of the Borough Council’s main committee and public rooms because of the risk of falling glass on the main staircase.

A stained glass skylight is one of the striking features of the Town Hall foyer and staircase, but a small number of the smaller panes have been left hanging over the stairwell by yesterday’s (Thurs) severe gale. The staircase is the main public access and fire escape to the Supper Room and the Assembly Room, which cannot be used until repairs have been carried out. In addition, the Council Chamber cannot be used because it provides an alternative fire escape route for other parts of the building.

The Town Hall will be closed to the public on Tuesday January 22nd to allow scaffolding to be erected in the stairwell. This will allow a detailed inspection and repair of the glazing. It is hoped that repairs will be completed in one day, but this depends upon the inspection. A further closure of the Town Hall to the public will be necessary to allow the removal of scaffolding once work has finished. The date for this will be announced when known.

Alternative public receptions are available nearby in Trafalgar House, the Maltings and Greyfriars.
