Paul Garrod has been selected as the next Mayor of Great Yarmouth.

His appointment was a unanimous decision by Conservative councillors at a group meeting held in January.

Councillor Garrod has chosen youth as the theme of his year in office, which will begin in May.

“I have a young family of my own, and am looking forward to taking them to as many events as I can while I am Mayor.

“On the day I am made Mayor I will announce the charities I will be supporting and they will all have a youthful theme.”

Councillor Garrod, who is an hotelier, will be joined in his role as Mayor by his wife Lisa as Mayoress.

The meeting to elect him was out of the ordinary as exceptionally high winds buffeting the Town Hall meant the building was closed early that day.

“I received a call for the Council’s Leader Barry Coleman asking if he could hold the meeting at my hotel the Furzedown,” explained Paul. “Naturally I was more than pleased to host the event.

“It is a great honour to be elected as Mayor and I am looking forward to the coming year. I hope people will remember me as the family Mayor as I do intend to involve my children William (8), and Katie (6), whenever I can.

“I am delighted that Paul will be the next Mayor of Great Yarmouth,” said Leader of the Council Barry Coleman.

“He has made a significant contribution to the Council already and I am certain that he and Lisa will be fine ambassadors for the Borough.”

Paul Garrod has represented the Yarmouth North Ward for five years. As well as his official duties he is also a volunteer lifeboatman with the Caister crew.

“I would also like to assure everyone in the Yarmouth North Ward that my year as Mayor will not make any difference to my representing them,” he added. “If anyone has a problem they want to talk about please contact me on 01493 844138.”
