Civic Awards Deadline Drawing Close
The Mayor of Great Yarmouth is urging people to nominate candidates for the Borough’s new Civic Awards as the closing deadline draws close.
In November Councillor Sue Robinson announced the awards to salute the achievements of people and organisations throughout the Borough.
“We have had a good response so far,“ said Sue. “But we have been surprised that some of the categories, which we felt would be the most popular, haven’t attracted many entries - just a couple in some cases.
“There are nine categories overall, but Young Citizen, the Environment, and Sport and Culture could do with a little more competition, please.
“But what really surprises me is that no one has nominated a Carer. We all know that carers do a wonderful job - someone must want to thank their’s through the award.
“You have until January 31 to get entries in for all the awards.”
Presentations will take place in March and the winners will receive a trophy or prize at a special ceremony.
To be eligible for nomination a person has to be resident in the Borough for a minimum of two years prior to the closing date.
The nine categories are:
Young Citizen of the Year – (Sponsored by Great Yarmouth Lions Club) A young person under the age of 18 who has made a significant contribution to the Borough, or achieved educational success and/or overcome personal difficulties
Community Award - (Sponsored by The Mercury). A community group or organisation that has made a significant improvement to the area in which it lives, or who has made a specific achievement to the benefit of others within the Borough
Lifetime Achievement - (Sponsored by The Italian Restaurant, King Street). A person who has gone the extra mile and provided an excellent contribution, dedication and service to the Borough
Sport and Culture - (Sponsored by BBC Radio Norfolk). A person who has excelled at sports, arts and culture which has brought credit to themselves or the Borough
Business of the Year - (Sponsored by PKF). A company large or small that has achieved outstanding success and shown their support to the Borough
Environment Awareness Award - (Sponsored by Councillor Barry Coleman). An individual that has significantly made an improvement to the environment - be it a project or individual achievement
Carer Award - A person who has shown outstanding commitment and support and improved another person’s life
Voluntary Award - (Sponsored by Councillor Bert Collins). A person who has given their time freely to help others, and
Mayor’s Special Award - (Sponsored by Her Worship the Mayor). An individual who has overcome exceptional difficulties, or has shown bravery and courage.
“To nominate a candidate for any of the categories there are forms at the Town Hall, or Council Office receptions,” explained the Mayor’s Secretary Laura Goodman. “Or alternatively an application can be found on www.great-yarmouth.gov.uk “The qualifications in each category have been left quite wide to allow a range of achievements to be considered in each, and where we say an individual if someone wants to nominate a group that is also ok.
“We have been very lucky to gain the support of sponsors, but we would appreciate more entries please. You must know someone who has done well this year and you would like to publicly thank them for it - this is your opportunity.”
“If you would like more details please give me a call on 01493 846125.”
