That's Just Rubbish - All 21 Tons of It!
PR 213
For immediate release12 July 2006
Tenants on Suffolk Road took Great Yarmouth Borough Council at its word when asked if they had any rubbish to get rid of - they produced 21 tons in just a few hours!
Three Council Housing Caretakers worked with a team from GYB Services, who deal with the Borough’s rubbish disposal, on an environmental action day initiated by discussions with the Halfway House Tenants and Residents association.
It allowed residents of Halfway House to clear redundant household and garden items.
Letters were sent out giving three areas where items such as mattresses, garden furniture and waste could be left to be collected on Friday July 7.
“The scheme was so successful that the three sites became seven as people dumped everything from three-piece suites to garden waste,” said Street Scene Inspector Terry Bensley.
“And that’s not counting the white goods items of 15 fridges, eight washing machines and nine cookers.
“It took the team six hours to clear everything up and then we brought in the mechanical sweeper to ensure that the sites were left looking clean and tidy.”
Speaking on behalf of the tenants and residents association Gail Yaxley said: “We were extremely pleased ay how efficiently the Council dealt with the amount of rubbish, and how the whole experience benefited the community.”
GYB Services offers a regular collection service for bulky items.
