Cemetery Gate to be Reopened at Public Request
PR 218
For immediate release
18 July 2006
Mindless vandalism led Great Yarmouth Bough Council to close a gate to a cemetery earlier this year - now due to public requests the entrance is to be re-opened.
In June the decision was made to lock the Belvedere Road entrance to Yarmouth New Cemetery (Northern) because of the amount of fly tipping and dog fouling near the gate.
Councillor Jim Shrimplin has been approached by members of the public about this issue. “In response to requests I have spoken to the police and the rangers who will be ensuring the cemetery in on their ‘task list’,” he commented.
“There have been several problems in the cemetery, but if the public wants this access then it has to play its part in ensuring that dogs are not walked there, as it is a wildlife conservation area.
“While the gate has been locked there has been no fly tipping - if that begins again it proves our point that the facility is being abused by the public.
“The school holidays begin soon, in the past young people have used the cemetery as a football ground and cricket pitch. That isn’t what it is for, please don’t let your children do this.”
Councillor Shrimplin’s words were backed by Bereavement Services Manager Linda Bigg.
“Please can I remind people that there is a Bye Law prohibiting dogs going into the cemetery,” added Linda. “But sadly that does not stop some irresponsible owners not only taking their dogs there, but also letting them run free and fouling the area, sometimes on graves.
“This kind of action does not show any respect for the dead.
“When the gates were locked we had very little trouble.
“Could we please ask that if anyone does see people abusing the cemetery in any way they call the Rangers on 01493 846478.”
For further information contact Councillor Jim Shrimplin on 01493 730821 or Bereavement Services Manager Linda Bigg on 01493 441974.
