Victorian-Era Graves Desecrated by Thieves

Thieves have desecrated two graves in Yarmouth’s new cemetery including one which is the last resting place of the Council’s Bereavement Services Manager Linda Bigg’s grandmother.

Rare Victorian-era stone rope grave edging has been taken from the grave of Florence Wickham

Mrs Wickham died in 1930 at the age of 41 and was buried with her younger sister Violet who died in 1899. Their grave and that of John Stimpson, who died in 1907, have had their edging removed - leaving just an indentation in the ground.

“This is a despicable act of theft,” said Linda. “It is a desecration of graves that have lain undisturbed for decades. I understand only too well the distress it causes families as it is my grandmother.

“My mother, who was only six-years-old when her mother died, is very distressed by the theft, and cannot understand why anyone would carry out such vandalism.

“The rope edging is very rare, because of its age, and would make a good price at sale. There may be other graves which have also been vandalised but relatives have not reported the theft to us so far.

“We have informed the police and are asking people who visit cemeteries in the Borough to be vigilant. If they see anything being removed they can contact the police on 0845 456 4567.

“We would also be interested to hear if rope edging or perhaps marble urns have been offered for sale or if anyone has seen anything recently at a local sale.”

If you see anything being removed from garves or any other vandalism please contact the police on 0845 456 4567.
