Spider Cuts a Swaith Across Cliff Top
PR 190
7 June 2006
For Immediate Release
Walkers along the Gorleston cliffs may have felt they were being tracked by something from Dr Who - as a bright yellow mechanical beastie moved across the grass.
But it was merely the debut of the Borough Council’s latest piece of grass cutting equipment - the Spider.
After a pilot last year GYB Services, who work with the Council to keep the town neat and tidy, has purchased the remote-controlled grass cutting mower which is designed to deal with slopes of up to 40 degrees.
“Using the Spider frees up as many as 25 men who were previously needed to cut the grass,” explained Operations Manager Robert Allen.
“We cut the grass on the cliffs six times a year; the operation takes just three days compared to the four-and-a-half it used to take.”
Spider operator Stephen Basey is extremely pleased with his new machine.
“It is not only easier to use,” he commented. “It gives a better cut than we got in the past.
“It has attracted a lot of attention from passers-by who want to know how it works.”
The equipment has attracted interest from other councils and it, together with the operator, are available for hire.
