Great Yarmouth Takes Pride in Awards
PR 193
13 June 2006
Staff at GYB Services took three top awards at the recent Pride of NCS Awards.
The team that keeps the Borough spick and span on behalf of Great Yarmouth Borough Council saw acclaim for its ‘Unsung Hero’ Vaughan Leggett, ‘Unsung Heroes’ the trade waste crew, and the customer services team who gained the NCS Portfolio Support Services Team award.
The awards, held at Norwich City Football Club, recognise the work carried out by 4,500 front-line public sector workers employed by Norfolk County Services which is wholly owned by Norfolk County Council.
Unsung Hero Vaughan is the Borough’s playground ranger. He visits sites repairing, replacing and cleaning – all this is carried out enthusiastically – despite knowing that much of his work will be undone by the very people he has carried it out for!
He gained his award for his high levels of self-motivation, and dedication.
The trade waste team of Unsung Heroes are Trevor Goodman and Russell Mancini. In high season they clear more than 200 bins a day which equals 125 tonnes of commercial waste each week.
Their award recognises the high number of thank you calls and letters received by GYB Services thanking it for the service given by Trevor and Russell.
Over the last 15 months the Council has been involved in the roll-out of its wheeled domestic waste bins throughout the Borough. During this time the GYB Customer Services team has received hundreds of calls from people needing help and education on how to use the bins.
They have worked tirelessly giving information, and at times have been on the end of abusive calls from customers – all of which has been taken in their stride. Their award puts them top of all the customer services teams operated by NCS.
“I hope all the award winners enjoyed stepping into the limelight because they deserve our thanks and praise,” said NCS Managing Director Peter Hawes. “These are people whose work is something taken for granted, but they have a vital role to perform in our everyday lives and are worthy of public recognition.”
“I am really pleased for those who received awards as they demonstrate the positive approach and personal characteristics that we are trying to promote across GYB Services as a whole,” commented Graham Jermyn, GYB Services Director.
“Although it is the winners that attract the attention, they all faced tough competition from other nominees and finalists. All of them can be proud of the work they are doing within the Borough.”
