Cemetery Shuts out the Vandals
PR 197
14 June 2006
Mindless vandalism and fly tipping have led Great Yarmouth Borough Council to take steps to help keep Yarmouth New Cemetery (Northern) a pleasanter place for mourners and families to visit.
The Belvedere Road entrance is to be locked for three months from June 19, to help deter fly tippers who dump rubbish at the gate and the vandals who use that entrance.
Genuine users of the cemetery will still be able to use the two entrances on North Denes Road and the one on Kitchener Road.
“Because the Council cares about what happens in its cemeteries and are guardians and protectors of the deceased, we have a responsibility to the families who visit here,” said Bereavement Services Manager, Linda Bigg.
“We apologise for any inconvenience but, this is a trial period which will allow us to gauge if the action has been effective.
“I would also like to take the opportunity to remind the public that the cemetery is a wildlife conservation area so dog walking is prohibited.
“A Byelaw does prohibit dogs, even on leads, from entering all Council run cemeteries as visitors attending graves do find it offensive to find dog faeces within the grounds.”
