Great Culture - With SeaChange Arts Partnership

PR 206

28 June 2006

For immediate release

Young people in Great Yarmouth have two years of exciting cultural adventures ahead of them including the opportunity to see what makes the Royal Opera House tick - thanks to Great Yarmouth Borough Council’s Arts Development agency - SeaChange Arts.

The programme is the work of the SeaChange Youth Arts Partnership - a new partnership between professional artists and arts organisations and bodies working with young people such as GFS Platform, Connexions, Norfolk Youth Service, the Youth Offending Team, YMCA Training, National Children’s Homes, MIND, Norfolk Attendance and Behaviour Service.

SeaChange Arts has put together a calendar of performing arts events and workshops for youngsters aged between 12 and 18.

The first date saw nearly 20 young people visit the Royal Opera House to take part in workshops exploring the music and costumes, and then watch a performance of Tosca.

“Most of the youngsters had never come into contact with opera before,” said Corrina Giles, Youth Arts Officer for SeaChange.

“It was lovely to see how absorbed they were in the production, knowing what had gone into putting it on stage. They enjoyed the whole occasion for some it was also their first trip to London.”

The first local workshop starts on Thursday 29 at the Marina Centre when up to 15, 12 to 18-year-olds will be learning the intracies of Capoeira Brazilian dance.

Later in the year workshops looking at antisocial and behavioural issues (which will include using comedy as a way to build confidence), opportunities to enter for arts award schemes, chances to perform at local festivals, and circus skills workshops are all on the agenda.

“The two-year programme is aimed at helping young people to develop skills, not only in art and culture, but to help them become more confident and find ways to express themselves,” said SeaChange Development Director Joe Mackintosh.

“The SeaChange Arts has secured £200,000 funding for the programme from organisations including Arts Council England and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation a charity which uses the arts, learning and education to help young people.

“The scheme allows a wide range of agencies to steer young people towards new interests and even the possibility of a career by obtaining writing, music or even dance and acting skills.”
