Clean Sweep Gets a Vote of Thanks

PR 208

28 June 2006

For immediate release

Residents in Victoria Road, Great Yarmouth, were so pleased after a visit from the DERT squad - they rang to say ‘fabulous’.

For weeks Mrs Sarah Williams, who lives at No 9, and her neighbours had been trying to combat fly-tipping in a passage at the back of their homes.

A problem that persisted until they called in help from GYB Services, the organisation that keeps the Borough clean for the Council, who alerted the Dynamic Environmental Response Team (DERT).

“We could never catch whoever it was dumping the bags,” said Mrs Williams. “My neighbours and I put some in our wheelie bins but we couldn’t keep up with it - in the end there must have been at least 40 bags piled up.

“The smell was so awful we felt we couldn’t use our back doors, and the flies were also bad.

“We called the council and they sent out the team that dealt with it. I wouldn’t have wanted the job - but when they had finished the rubbish and smell had vanished completely.”

The DERT squad removed the refuse and disinfected the area as well as weeding to smarten the whole place up.

“On the same day that Mrs Williams called we had another thank you for a similar operation in Battery Road,” explained Street Scene Inspector Terry Bensley.

“Mrs Pamela Lear a partner at East Coast Insulations called to say fly-tipping had been removed and the street swept and how much better it looked. It does make a difference when people say thank you, after all it isn’t one of the most pleasant jobs to do.”

In the words of Mrs Williams the job carried out in Victoria Road was: “Fabulous, marvellous - they cleared and cleaned up brilliantly.”

The squad undertakes work of this nature when incidents are reported to GYB Services on 01493 846846, as well as regular deep-cleaning routines throughout the Borough, which sees roads receiving a mechanical clean and even the weeds removed between pavements and walls.

For further information call Street Scene Inspector Terry Bensley on 01493 846144.
